Nesurasa Rasanayagam

Helvetzid on February 15, 2022 in Gampelen refugee camp.

The family's request to perform an autopsy and transport the body to Sri Lanka was not followed up: according to the migration service, this was too expensive. Only after two weeks of pressure on the authorities by members of Stop Isolation was Nesura's death officially communicated to the family by the Swiss authorities.

For Nesura's friends and family it is clear that the responsible authorities and the Swiss asylum system are partly responsible for his death. Nesura's death was a Helvetzid! How many more people have to die before Switzerland admits that its racist and inhumane asylum regime does not work! We demand the processing of all deaths in asylum camps and deportation detention as well as a satisfaction for the Rasanayagam family!

Nesurasa Rasanayagam is from Sri Lanka and applied for asylum in Switzerland in 2015. The authorities rejected his application. Finally, Nesurasa Rasanayagam came to the return camp in Gampelen. There he suffered from the isolation and lack of prospects in the emergency regime. He developed strong fears and an alcohol addiction. ORS AG was aware of all this, but did not treat the psychological suffering. Sometime between February 15 and 17, 2022, Nesurasa Rasanayagam died. His body was found in the Isleren Canal. A physician determined death without a time of death. The public prosecutor's office refrained from conducting an autopsy and investigating the more precise causes and responsibilities for the death, and quickly discontinued the proceedings. Contrary to the explicit wishes of the family, the body was cremated.

Today we are in front of the prison Bässlergut to protest against the deportation practice of Switzerland to Sri Lanka. But the deportation practice to Sri Lanka is not alone, it is an expression of the whole migration policy of Switzerland. [...] Deportation and imprisonment based on origin is torture and racist: People have to flee from war, economic and ecological crises. These crises and wars have a system. They are caused by the neo-colonial policy of the West. Those people who make the perilous flight across the Mediterranean to Fortress Europe are threatened with imprisonment and deportation in Switzerland. Switzerland in particular plays a central role in global exploitation. It is Swiss companies that exploit the resources in other regions of the world, it is Swiss banks that earn billions with wars. [...] Let's show solidarity with the prisoners and let's set a sign together against this racist policy!

[...] Tamil asylum seekers are traumatized as survivors of genocide and because of inhumane asylum processes. For such people, this practice can have deadly consequences. Let me tell you the story of three Tamil people. Kowsika passed away in Basel on June 14, 2018. Nesurasa Rasanaygam passed away on 02/15/2022 in Gampelen. Naguleswaran Viijayan passed away on 20.06.2022 in Delemont. On the legal level, physical and mental health must be confirmed in order to carry out deportation. Therefore, mental illnesses are deliberately overlooked in order to be able to carry out this deportation en nevertheless. As you can see, this has deadly consequences. We know that there are more cases. But because of the federal structure, it is difficult to see the statistics. But we will gather every single case and fight for justice for every single person.
